Ecology as Theology: Decline as Grace (Michael Dowd sermon 2020)
This is Rev. Michael Dowd's first sermon during the covid lockdowns. He presented it in video format in advance, for use at the Sunday Service 16 April 2020 of the First Unitarian Church of Dallas, Texas.
His points are presented in a series of 3 topical categories:
Understanding, Remembering, and Inspiring.
This video was posted posthumously by his wife, Connie Barlow, when she discovered it in his dropbox folder in 2024 (for downloading by the church). Connie did the video editing before Michael put it in his dropbox, but for some reason she forgot to post it on this youtube channel. Rediscovering it 4 years later, Connie thought it was one of his best - and loved the fact it was under 12 minutes. It also demonstrates how disconcerting the lockdowns were, and thus how easy it was for Michael to normalize the idea of societal decline.

Michael Dowd delivered this online sermon August 2021 for Community Unitarian Universalists of Brighton, Michigan. Following Michael's death in October 2023, the service leader of that sermon (Terry Sharik) and I (Michael's widow, Connie Barlow) decided in 2024 to edit and post this sermon as a legacy piece. As video editor, I extracted the sermon from the full church service video - and lo and...

I am responding to Michael, who said, “I just do not understand how you could say that electrifying everything is going to make things worse.” (19:44). Basically, we do not have the resources or the time. Michael Michaux did a study, “Assessment of the Extra Capacity Required of Alternative Energy Electrical Power Systems to Completely Replace Fossil Fuels,” which is 1000 pages in length. He found we do not have the materials or time to do the job. Michael goes on to say: “I think that given the progress has been made over the last little while uh electrification will give us some Breathing Room” (22:18) This does not work because of Jevon's paradox. This occurs when technological progress increases the efficiency with which a resource is used. Still, the falling cost of use induces increases in demand enough that resource use is increased rather than reduced. The fact is, this civilisation is coming to an end. Our species may survive if we are able to make big changes in not just how we do things but what things we do.

I think it is the point, many indigenous cultures understood the natural world better than we do. When the "natives" colonized the Americas, starting about 30Kyears ago, despite small numbers and no real technology, they managed to wipe out all the megafauna but one- the Bison. Your view is just not based in reality. But I will say this- they had a better sense of how reliant they were on nature becuase they lived as primitives. Human mass on earth = 36% Domesticated land mammal mass = 60% Wild mammal mass, on land = 4% 10,000 years ago there were 1500 pounds of wild mammals per human on this planet… in the year 1800 there were 200 pounds of wild mammal per human on this planet… Today there is 5 pounds of wild mammal per human on this planet… This is largely due to human overpopulation… This is ecocide. The number one thing that any one person can do to address the worldwide meta-crisis, is to support a voluntary reduction of the human population. We need a 25% ecological footprint tax for the richest 1% of the world to hire the appropriate medical staff, and set up mobile units that could go to communities around the world, paying people to get sterilized. Organizations, such as the nonprofit#WorldVasectomyDayWouldBeIdeal. When considering, renewable energy options to mitigate the suffering caused by our predicament… Don’t believe the bright green lies! There is nothing renewable about so-called “renewable energy“. Energy powers ecological devastation independent of its source. If human beings actually had an endless source of free clean green energy… Which does not exist it would only fuel the acceleration of the destruction of the biosphere. Deforestation, ocean depletion, habitat loss, desertification, biodiversity loss, soil degradation, groundwater depletion, overpopulation, rampant pollution, and the six mass extinction would all continue to accelerate. This is not a supply problem… It’s a demand problem! Fewer humans equals less suffering for all life on earth! We really need to promote government and nonprofit funded vasectomies and tubal ligations. I realize that it is unlikely that governments will pass a tax on the rich to pay for voluntary sterilization, and you may not be able to contribute, or participate in a nonprofit that funds voluntary sterilization. However, you can discuss with others whether it is ethical to bring a child onto a planet in the midst of ecological collapse. We can talk about the ways that we can mitigate suffering, or people can stay silent, remain ignorant, live in denial, continue to celebrate procreation, and contribute to the suffering. We can either reduce our population by choice… Or we can let nature do it in her unmerciful way… it’s biology 101… A life that is never brought into existence, is a life that will not have to suffer the unequivocal impending collapse.
